Selling counterfeit dollars: case against two Kyiv residents referred to court

Two 23-year-old men in Kyiv are suspected of illegally storing, transporting, and selling counterfeit US dollars. The case is already in court.

The Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office reported this on March 12.

According to the investigation, a student at a higher education institution in Kyiv and a former police officer sold 2,000 fake dollars to another Kyiv resident. The fakes were worth half the real value, meaning that for 1,000 fake dollars, you had to pay 500 real ones.

The men were informed of suspicion under parts 1, 2 of article 199 Production, storage, purchase, transportation, shipment, import into Ukraine for the purpose of use in the sale of goods, sale or distribution of counterfeit money, government securities existing in paper form, state lottery tickets, excise tax stamps or holographic security elements of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction for the article is from 5 to 10 years of imprisonment with confiscation of property. The pre-trial investigation has now been completed, the indictment has been sent to the court.

Other similar counterfeit money cases

In December 2025, detectives from the Territorial Department of the Bureau of Economic Security in Kyiv sent the case materials regarding the sale of counterfeit foreign currency to the court. A man who paid for equipment with counterfeit banknotes will be tried.

It was previously reported that a pseudo-postwoman will be tried in Kyiv. The woman came to the pensioner's home and convinced her that she needed to exchange old banknotes for new ones. The suspect took the money and in return gave her an envelope with papers, claiming that it contained money.

The Kyiv Regional Prosecutor's Office also sent charges to the court against a 59-year-old man. Law enforcement officers suspect him of selling counterfeit foreign and national currency in particularly large amounts. The investigation established that, for example, for counterfeiting 10 thousand dollars, the defendant asked for 3,500 real currency. The total amount of seized counterfeits in hryvnia equivalent exceeded 2.3 million hryvnias.
