Prosecutors from the Prosecutor General's Office have filed an indictment against a Russian serviceman, who is accused of violating the laws and customs of war. According to the case materials, in March 2022, during the occupation of part of the Kyiv region, he raped a local resident.
This was reported on Tuesday, February 24, by the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office.
The accused served in the 37th Separate Guards Motorized Rifle Brigade of the 36th Combined Arms Army, part of the Eastern Military District of the Russian Federation (military unit No. 69647), which is stationed in the Republic of Buryatia.
His actions are classified under Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — violation of the laws and customs of war. The sanction of this article provides for 8 to 12 years of imprisonment.
Law enforcement officials note that the Russian military systematically uses such crimes as a way to pressure and intimidate the civilian population in the occupied territories.
The investigative editorial team of Suspilny investigated how justice works against the occupiers and what will happen to sentences passed in absentia. Is there a chance that criminals will end up behind bars, and are those who have already been sentenced in absentia still serving their sentences?
