Brazilian club Flamengo has announced the termination of cooperation with head coach Filipe Luis after the team's crushing 8-0 victory in the semifinals of the Carioca League.
The decision to resign was made public on Tuesday, March 3, after a game against Madureira in the semifinals of the Rio de Janeiro state league. Although Flamengo won 8-0 (11-0 on aggregate), fans in the stands booed the players and demanded the dismissal of the coaching staff.
“Flamengo Club announces that as of this Tuesday, Filipe Luis will no longer lead the professional team. Ivan Palanco (assistant coach) and Diogo Linares (physical training coach) are also leaving the club. Flamengo thanks former player and coach Filipe Luis for everything that has been achieved and experienced during this period. The club wishes him great success and good luck in his future professional career,” the club's official statement said.
Filipe Luis, a former Atletico and Brazil defender, took over as Flamengo manager in 2024, immediately after his playing career ended. During his tenure, the team played 101 matches, winning 64 and losing just 15.
In the previous season, Flamengo, under Luis' leadership, won the Brazilian championship, as well as the Copa Libertadores, the Carioca Championship and the Super Cup. As the winner of the 2022 Copa Libertadores, the team also participated in the 2025 Club World Cup, where they lost 2-4 to Bayern in the round of 16.
Despite last year's success and a recent contract extension until 2027, Flamengo's 2026 season has been their worst start to a decade. The club is currently 11th in Serie A, having collected four points from their opening three matches.
Flamengo's next match will be away against Fluminense on Sunday, March 8.
