In the Rivne region, two engineers were reported suspicious in connection with a fatal accident. According to the investigation, it occurred due to the poor condition of the road.
The regional police departments and prosecutor's offices were informed about this on February 27.
What is known about the accident in the Rivne region?
The accident killed women aged 66, 61 and 13. Two other passengers were taken to hospital. One of them was pregnant and lost her baby.
The accident occurred on July 31, 2023 on the Kyiv-Kovel-Yagodyn highway, near the village of Gorodets in the Sarny district. According to the investigation, the 39-year-old driver of a Landwind car from the Kyiv region hit a section of the road with subsidence of asphalt. As a result, the vehicle overturned and caught fire.
During the pre-trial investigation, police officers established that the cause of the accident was the poor condition of the road. In this regard, the criminal case against the driver was closed due to the absence of elements of a crime in her actions,
– the police reported.
According to the prosecutor's office, subsidence had formed on this section of the road, which should have been eliminated or appropriate warning signs should have been installed. Suspicions were raised against two officials responsible for the maintenance and safety of this section.
The 63-year-old engineer of the company, on whose balance sheet the road was located, is charged with violating traffic safety rules and leading to the death of people. The sanction of the relevant article provides for a fine of 34,000 to 51,000 hryvnias, corrective labor, or restriction or imprisonment for a term of up to 5 years.
A 58-year-old official responsible for the repair and operation of highways has been charged with official negligence, which has caused serious consequences. If found guilty, he faces 5 to 8 years in prison with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions.
