Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the country should “immediately send troops to Ukraine” until Russia's war against Ukraine ends.
Boris Johnson announced this in an interview with the BBC.
“If we can have a plan to send troops into Ukraine after the war, after Putin agrees to a ceasefire, then why not do it now?” Boris Johnson said.
He said the military should be sent “to peaceful regions in non-combat roles.”
Boris Johnson also stated that “the conflict (as he called Russia's war against Ukraine – ed.) could have been prevented if Western allies had paid more attention to Putin's growing aggression and his annexation of Crimea in 2014.”
The former British Prime Minister agreed that Ukraine's partner countries in Europe and the United States “have been too slow and cautious in providing support to Ukraine.” But he said that the UK's support for Ukraine “has been significant.”
On January 6, Ukraine, France, and the United Kingdom signed a Declaration of Intent in Paris on the deployment of multinational forces in Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron said the creation of a “multinational force” would provide “a kind of guarantee” for Ukraine after the ceasefire. He said preparations were underway to create such a force “in the air, at sea, on land, to provide some form of calm the day after the ceasefire and far from the contact line.”
In turn, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that the signed Declaration of Intent is a signal of “seriousness” and, in particular, it allows “to work on legal obligations” in the future.
On January 9, US President Donald Trump said he was ready to commit to the United States' participation in the future defense of Ukraine, but only on the condition that Russia does not try to invade again. The Russian Foreign Ministry called such initiatives “militarization and escalation of the conflict.”
In February, it became known that Ukraine and the United States were finalizing security guarantees for Ukraine. The United States declared its readiness to ratify such guarantees in Congress.
On January 25, Zelensky announced that a bilateral document on security guarantees from the United States for Ukraine was 100% ready. At the time, he noted that for Kyiv, specific security guarantees should allow it to end this war and prevent another one.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that for Ukraine, specific security guarantees should make it possible to end Russia's war against Ukraine and prevent another war.
