The United States has recognized three additional victims of the September 11 attacks, who perished during the assault on the World Trade Center towers in New York nearly 24 years ago, according to NPR.
The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in New York City stated that the identification was achieved through information provided by families and sophisticated DNA analysis methods.
Two individuals’ names have been disclosed: Barbara Keating from Palm Springs, California, and Ryan Fitzgerald from New York.
The remains of another adult female have also been identified, but her name remains undisclosed at the request of her family.
“Every new identification serves as a testament to the potential of science and the ongoing support for families, even as time passes. We carry on this endeavor as our way of honoring the memories of those who lost their lives,” remarked Jason Graham, New York City’s Chief Medical Examiner.
He noted that, to date, 1,653 individuals out of the 2,753 who died in New York have been identified.
BACKGROUNDOn September 11, 2001, the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda seized control of civilian airliners and utilized them to attack the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. A fourth aircraft was headed for Washington, D.C., but crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after crew members and passengers attempted to retake control of the cockpit. A total of 2,977 individuals lost their lives in the September 11 attacks.
