A blaze has erupted at the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Cordoba, commonly referred to as the Mezquita, according to El Pais. This structure is one of Spain’s most significant and iconic architectural landmarks and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The fire ignited on August 8 at 9:00 PM and was brought under control by 10:30 PM, but it wasn’t entirely extinguished until 12:30 AM on August 9.
Sources within the city administration indicated that the initial cause of the fire was a short circuit in a cleaning machine located in the Almansor Chapel.
“It is likely that the fire began from a sweeping machine situated inside the church, positioned between two chapels, which allowed the flames to spread rapidly due to the surrounding wooden structures. Thankfully, the firefighters responded promptly,” stated the emeritus bishop of Cordoba, Demetrio Fernandez.
José María Bellido, the mayor of the city, visited the mosque following the incident and remarked that the situation would not result in a catastrophe.
“While there will be damage, and it represents a significant loss for a World Heritage site, the monument itself remains intact,” he affirmed.
The Local Police has cordoned off the entire Mezquita Catedral to facilitate the work of the firemen, who also work on the roofs of the monument
