Peace talks in Geneva – Ukrainian delegation arrived in Switzerland on February 16 – what Umerov says

A new round of trilateral peace talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the United States to end the war will take place in Switzerland on February 17-18. The Ukrainian team of negotiators arrived in Geneva on the evening of February 16.

This was reported by the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council and the head of the Ukrainian delegation, Rustem Umerov.

What does Ukraine expect from the talks in Geneva?

According to Umerov, the agenda for the meeting has already been agreed upon. The Ukrainian delegation is ready to work.

We look forward to constructive work and substantive meetings on security and humanitarian issues – to advance towards a dignified and sustainable peace,
– Umerov emphasized.

It is also worth noting that from the Ukrainian side, the following will participate in the meeting:

  • Kirill Budanov – Head of the President's Office;
  • Andriy Gnatov – Chief of the General Staff;
  • David Arakhamia – Head of the “Servant of the People” faction in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine;
  • Serhiy Kyslytsia – First Deputy Head of the President's Office;
  • Vadym Skibitskyi – Deputy Head of the Military Directorate of the Ministry of Defense.

What statements have been made regarding the negotiations recently?

  • According to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, during the meeting the parties plan to discuss, among other things, territorial issues. He also stressed that Volodymyr Medinsky will head the Russian delegation at the talks on Ukraine. In addition, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin, GRU head Igor Kostyukov and other officials will take part in the negotiations.

  • Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that President Donald Trump's initiatives aimed at finding ways to end the war in Ukraine are causing an unexpectedly critical reaction from part of the international community.

  • At the same time, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), during the talks in Geneva, Russia may seek not only territorial concessions from Ukraine. Analysts suggest that the Kremlin seeks to change the political leadership in Kyiv to one more loyal to Moscow and weaken Ukrainian statehood.
