At the start of the competition, Vaught was in the lead, but after six laps, the 24-year-old skater was already in fourth place. However, with four laps to go, two consecutive collisions occurred: first, three athletes fell along the course and were eliminated from the race for medals, and then two more skaters collided and lost speed.

As a result, the Dutchman broke into the lead and managed to finish the race with a victory, overtaking Korean skater Hwang Dae-Hon by 0.85 seconds. Latvian Roberts Kruzbergs sensationally finished third, winning his country's first Olympic medal in this discipline.
