Figure skater Kyrylo Marsak completed the short program of the 2026 Olympics with the best result for Ukraine in 28 years

Ukrainian figure skater Kyrylo Marsak qualified for the free skate program of the 2026 Olympic Games with a personal best.

On Tuesday, February 10, skaters' auditions for the men's singles competition took place. 29 skaters performed a short program, which led to the selection of 24 athletes for the free program.

Marsak performed under the eighth starting number. For his performance, the Ukrainian skater received a score of 86.89 points, which allowed him to get ahead of at least six rivals and qualify for the free program early.

In addition, Kyrylo also surpassed his personal career record in the short program by 10 points.

After all performances, Marsak took 11th place, losing 21.27 points to the leader Ilya Malinin (USA). Japanese skater Yuma Kagiyama finished the short program in second place, and the top three were completed by Frenchman Adam Siao Him Fa.

Marsak's result is the third in the history of Ukrainian figure skaters in the men's short program. Until now, only two skaters have finished this part of the competition in the top 10: Dmytro Dmytrenko, who took eighth place at the 1998 Games, and Viktor Petrenko, who took ninth place at the 1994 Olympics.

The free program in men's single skating will take place on Friday, February 13. Start time is 8:00 PM Kyiv time; live broadcast is on Suspilne Sport.
