Austria wins sensational alpine skiing gold after Shiffrin's slalom failure

The Austrian team duo of Katharina Huber and Ariane Redler became the champions of the 2026 Olympic Games in the women's combined alpine skiing event.

On Tuesday, February 10, the women's combined alpine skiing competition took place. 28 teams took part, each with two participants: one competing in downhill, the other in slalom. The final times of both athletes determined the winners of the Olympics.

In the downhill, the 2026 Olympic downhill champion Breeze Johnson (USA) won. The American was 0.06 seconds ahead of her closest competitor, Austrian Ariane Redler.

Johnson's partner in the combination was World Cup record holder Mikaela Shiffrin, who has dominated slalom this season with seven stage wins.

However, the 30-year-old skier had problems at the beginning of the course: Shiffrin lost time on the first part of the course, but by the middle the American managed to even things out. Closer to the finish line, Shiffrin began to lose seconds again – and sensationally showed only the 15th time in her type of program.

Thus, the American duo of Johnson and Shiffrin fell outside the podium – dropping to fourth place, and the victory went to Austrians Katharina Huber and Ariane Redler.
