Due to constant massive attacks by Russia, many Ukrainians suffer without electricity and heating during severe frosts. In spring and summer, the problem of lack of heat will recede into the background. However, power outages may remain.

Sviatoslav Pavlyuk, Executive Director of the Association “Energy-Efficient Cities of Ukraine”, told Channel 24 whether problems with electricity supply will continue when it gets warmer. Also, the Burshtynska TPP in Ivano-Frankivsk region, which stopped the heat supply after enemy shelling on February 7, partially restored it on February 9.

What will the situation be in Ukraine's energy system in the summer?

Pavlyuk recalled that before 2013, before the war with Russia, the installed capacity of generating machines in the system totaled over 50 MW. At its peak, approximately 32 GW was used in 2013-2014.

Worth knowing. According to Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal, the electricity supply situation remained tense after the shelling on February 7 due to significant damage. He noted that additional generation capacity had been launched, in particular, another 9 MW were to be put into operation in Kyiv.

“In the last winters we went through, there were 18 GW, but now we do not have these indicators to generate enough electricity and deliver it to consumers. Our energy has fallen dramatically. And restoring this potential will be very difficult, expensive and long,” Svyatoslav Pavlyuk emphasized.

Therefore, according to the executive director of the Association “Energy-Efficient Cities of Ukraine”, there will be outages in the summer as well. However, there may be fewer of them during the day, because solar generation will appear. However, in the evenings, when the population consumes electricity the most, these complications may occur.

What is the situation with power outages in Ukraine?

  • Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi stressed that today Ukraine is facing one of the most difficult electricity supply situations in the past four years. He stressed that Lviv is also facing difficulties with electricity supply, but there is “more light in the city now than in Kyiv.”

  • In Kyiv, after the massive attack on February 7, thanks to the round-the-clock work of power engineers who eliminated the consequences of enemy shelling, on February 8, the city was able to return to temporary power outage schedules.

  • Also on February 5, Ukrenergo denied false information spread by Telegram channels that, due to increased power outages, “the light may not come on at all.” The company noted that “the information spread has nothing to do with reality.”
