The Vinnytsia Public Prosecution Service has notified a man of suspicion regarding the shooting at functionaries of the Territorial Recruitment Center and a police patrolman. The event unfolded on February 1st in Vinnytsia, and the perpetrator was apprehended on February 4th.

The Vinnytsia Regional Prosecutor’s Office has formally presented accusations against a local individual who discharged a firearm at representatives from the local recruitment center and a police officer. The event transpired in early February within the city proper, however, law enforcement managed to take the shooter into custody just a few days following the offense. As per the inquiry, on the morning of February 1, 2026, in the vicinity of Vinnytsia’s Central Market, the accused discharged several rounds from an unidentified firearm aimed at the rapid response team. At that juncture, the team comprised a community police officer and military personnel from the Vinnytsia ORTC and SP, who were undertaking mobilization efforts. Fortunately, none of the authorities, soldiers, or civilian bystanders sustained injuries.

Post-shooting, the individual promptly escaped the area. Law enforcement initiated an extensive search, culminating on February 4 with the apprehension of the assailant. Presently, detectives from the Vinnytsia District Police Directorate are undertaking a preliminary investigation to ascertain the origin of the weapon and the rationales behind the aggression.

Legal qualification and preventive measure

The Vinnytsia District Attorney’s Office is indicting the individual in custody with infringing upon the lives of a law enforcement official and military figures. Based on Article 348 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, such actions are liable to considerable imprisonment or even life imprisonment.

Prosecutors have already lodged a request with the judiciary to enforce the most stringent preventative action against the suspect: detention without bond.
