How will prices for popular products change in February?

UCAB analyst Maksym Hopka told Channel 24 that in February in Ukraine we can expect an increase in food prices within 3-5% . Power outages and severe frosts force producers to use alternative energy sources, which directly affects the cost of goods and prices for consumers.

The rise in the price of imported products is possible due to the increase in the dollar and euro exchange rates in January. Seasonal factors also have an impact.

Prices for vegetables and fruits will increase in February due to seasonal price increases. Stocks of high-quality vegetables are gradually running out, leading to a moderate price increase. Dairy products will also become more expensive due to the need to use additional energy sources for storage and production.

According to the analyst, purchase prices for meat decreased in January. This is for live weight pork, the average price of which is currently 62.23 hryvnias per kilogram.

The dynamics of prices is influenced by a complex of factors , including the complication of production processes due to unstable power supply and the traditional seasonal weakening of demand for meat products. Cases of the spread of African swine fever are recorded in some regions of Ukraine.

Pork prices in supermarkets also show a downward trend:

  • average price for a collar – 309 hryvnias per kilogram (+22% growth per year);
  • the average price for pork shoulder is 223 hryvnia per kilogram: decreased by 3% per month, but increased by 22% per year;
  • The average price for brisket is 213 hryvnias per kilogram: a decrease of 5% per month, and an increase of 20% per year.

The key factor that will influence the price increase in February remains the situation in the energy sector. Storing vegetables and ensuring the operation of livestock complexes with the help of generators increases the cost of production. Logistics costs are also significant due to the increase in fuel prices, concludes analyst Maksym Hopka.
