On Thursday, September 11, Finnish President Alexander Stubb arrived in Ukraine. In Kyiv, he and Volodymyr Zelensky honored the memory of fallen Ukrainian soldiers at the Wall of Remembrance. The leaders of the countries plan to discuss a number of issues, including sanctions against Russia and security guarantees for Kyiv.

Head of State Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced Stubb’s visit to Kyiv on Telegram. He also published photos and videos with footage of the commemoration of the fallen defenders of Ukraine.

“Today, together with the President of Finland, Alexander Stubb, at the Wall of Remembrance in Kyiv, we honored the Ukrainian defenders who gave their lives for Ukraine,” Zelensky wrote.

According to the head of the President’s Office, Andriy Yermak, during the visit, Stubb plans to discuss several key topics with the Ukrainian leader:

  • implementation of joint security projects;
  • issues of European integration;
  • investments in infrastructure restoration and development;
  • security guarantees for Ukraine;
  • increasing international pressure on Russia.

Ukraine and Finland

The Finnish government has previously decided to allocate 90 million euros to provide Ukraine with ammunition. The funds will come from the proceeds of Russian assets frozen in the European Union and will be channeled through the European Peace Fund.

Thus, Finland joins the initiative of EU countries that use revenues from blocked Russian resources for military assistance to Ukraine. The Finnish Ministry of Defense specified that the funding will go to the purchase of large-caliber ammunition with a total value of 90 million euros.

On April 3, 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Finnish President Alexander Stubb signed a historic Agreement on Security Cooperation and Long-Term Support. In fact, Finland became the eighth country with which a security agreement has been concluded.
