IMF preliminary estimates fall in Ukraine’s GDP at 35% in 2022 – Rashkovan

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) calculation methodology, which takes into account such military conflicts, estimates the fall in GDP due to Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine at 35% in 2022, Alternate Executive Director for Ukraine at the IMF Vladislav Rashkovan has said.

"Based on similar military conflicts, the IMF has a methodology for calculating preliminary losses, according to which Ukraine will lose up to 35% of GDP. But this is based on the current situation and the dynamics of the last few days, when we do not have the highest intensity of shelling and there is a negotiation process that purely theoretically, it can lead to some result," he said in an interview with the NV publication.

At the same time, the financier said that forecasts should be made with an understanding of the end point of the war, and this now does not exist neither for Ukraine in terms of destruction, nor for the aggressor country in terms of the fall of its economy due to sanctions pressure.

"In addition, now, thanks to the efforts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, our negotiating position is obviously better than it was ten days ago. It is also clear that if Putin does not agree to any conditions that are digestible for us, then the fall of the Russian economy will continue large, and this should also be taken into account," Rashkovan said.
