In 2025, Ukraine plans to expand cotton cultivation to 30,000 hectares and launch financing programs for farmers engaged in cotton farming, according to Ukraine's Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food, Vitaliy Koval, via Telegram.
"Cotton is a crop used for producing gunpowder, making it especially crucial for Ukraine during wartime. Additionally, cotton can be used to produce fabric and oil," Koval said.
He noted that the harvest of Ukraine's first cotton crop is nearing completion. Test plantations were planted in Odesa this spring across eight farms and one research plot from the Ukrainian Institute for Plant Variety Examination. These plots range from 0.2 to 0.5 hectares.
Farmers have already obtained 110 kg of cotton seeds, which were sown on over 5 hectares. In total, five cotton varieties have been imported into Ukraine: two from the United States, two from Germany, and one from Türkiye.
