Trump was not surprised by Russia's latest attack on Ukraine — White House

White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said that US President Donald Trump was not surprised by the overnight Russian attack on Ukraine, despite the fact that it occurred at a time when Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin allegedly agreed not to shell Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities during the cold snap.

She stated this during a conversation with journalists broadcast by the C-SPAN channel.

“I spoke to the president about this this morning, and his reaction, unfortunately, was unsurprising. These are two countries that have been fighting an extremely brutal war for several years now — a war that would never have started if the president were still in office. It started because of the weakness and incompetence of the previous president, Joe Biden,” Levitt said.

According to her, this is why Trump continues to “aggressively” take diplomatic measures to end the war in Ukraine.

“Trump always seeks to engage in diplomacy first, but clearly it takes two to tango. To achieve a result, you need a partner who is willing to engage in dialogue, and that is what Special Envoy Witkoff intends to explore and discuss,” the spokeswoman added.
