Ukrainian hacker on FBI lists

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation and European Union law enforcement agencies have put Ukrainian citizen Volodymyr Tymoshchuk on the international wanted list, suspected of large-scale cyberattacks against global companies. According to the FBI, the man allegedly administered at least three different ransomware families. These are LockerGoga, MegaCortex, and Nefilim.

From December 2018 to October 2021, these viruses infected the computer networks of hundreds of enterprises around the world, including more than 250 American companies. The ultimate goal is to block data and demand ransoms.

In the US, Tymoshchuk faces a number of charges: conspiracy to defraud, willful damage to protected systems, unauthorized access to them, and threats to disclose confidential information. A federal arrest warrant was issued on May 7, 2024.

The FBI is offering a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Tymoshchuk, and another $1 million for information on other leaders of the aforementioned hacker groups. At the same time, the Ukrainian cyber police reported that some of his associates have already been detained, some are facing trial, and the property of the attackers has been seized. One of the members of the international group has already been extradited to the United States.

Cyberhackers from Ukraine are known all over the world

This case is not unique. In May, another hacker was exposed in the Kyiv region, who created a program to intercept electronic coupons at the Ministry of Internal Affairs service centers. In this way, he earned tens of thousands of dollars and will now stand trial, as reported by the metropolitan prosecutor’s office.

At the same time, there is another side to the cyber front – Ukrainian IT specialists sometimes work for the state. For example, in June, the GUR special group of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine carried out an attack on the online system of Russian railways. The impact power reached 6 GB and almost 2.5 million packets per second, which paralyzed the work of the official resource zd.ru.
