President of UN General Assembly: I have not seen single document on Russia’s legitimate membership in Security Council

The President of the United Nations General Assembly, Dennis Francis, said that he had not seen a single document confirming that Russia legitimately hds the seat of a permanent member of the UN Security Council with a veto.

He said this in an interview with Ukrinform.

"…You said 'legitimate membership in the Security Council'. I was not at the UN when this happened. This should have happened around the time of the clapse of the USSR in 1990-1991. But no, I have not seen any document yet. And I don't know if such a document exists," said the head of the General Assembly.

As Ukrinform reported earlier, Ukraine has repeatedly raised the issue of the legality of Russia's membership in the UN, as no documents of the Organization provide for its membership. Among the founders of the UN are the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China, and the Soviet Union, which are also permanent members of the Security Council.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba is convinced that Russia has never legally acquired the status of a permanent member of the UN Security Council and should be expelled from this respected body.

Permanent Representative of Ukraine Serg Kyslytsya stated that the Russian Federation does not dare to legitimize its presence among the permanent members of the UN Security Council, as it pursues an aggressive picy towards other states and cannot count on the support of two-thirds of the members, as provided for in the Charter.

To change the composition of the Security Council, a corresponding decision of the General Assembly is required.
