Yakiv Smolii served as governor of the National Bank of Ukraine from 2017 until July 3, 2020, when the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament voted to accept his resignation. He said that he had been subjected to sustained political pressure that threatened the independence of the central bank.
