The Danish national team defeated Germany in the final and became European handball champions for the first time in 14 years.

Denmark became the European Men's Handball Champion for the third time. In the decisive match of Euro 2026, the Danes defeated Germany (34:27).

Denmark competed in the final after defeating Iceland in the semi-final (31:28). Germany, on the other hand, defeated Croatia in the other semi-final by the same score.

The pair of finalists met for the second time since the start of the championship: in the main round, Denmark defeated Germany by five goals (31:26). And in the Euro finals, the teams played their first-ever head-to-head match.

How the Euro 2026 final went

  • In the first half, both teams took the lead. Denmark remained ahead for the most part – Germany evened the gap at 14:14, but eventually lost the first half by two goals – 18:16.
  • Germany tied the score again after the break at 19:19. However, Denmark regained the lead with a three-goal streak, which they extended towards the end, immediately expanding the lead to seven goals.
  • The most productive player for the newly crowned champions was point guard Simon Pitlik with eight goals. Both goalkeepers of the Danes — Kevin Möller and Emil Nielsen — finished the game with a save rate of over 30%, parrying eight and seven shots respectively.

What does Denmark's victory in the final mean?

  • Denmark's third title in the history of the European Championships. In terms of this indicator at the tournament, the team is second only to Sweden and France, who have won the Euro five and four times respectively.
  • Denmark ended their losing streak in Euro finals. After their last title in 2012, the team played for the trophy in 2014 and 2024 – both losing to France.
  • The Danes have collected a complete collection of the biggest international trophies in world handball: in 2024, the national team won the Olympic gold medal, and in 2025, the World Championship.
  • Germany lost the Euro final for the first time since 2002. Since then, the team has won both matches for the 2004 and 2016 trophies.
