Czech Republic tightens residency rules for Ukrainian refugees

The Czech government has approved an amendment to the Law on the Residence of Ukrainian Refugees, which tightens conditions for them in certain aspects.

This is reported by the Novinky publication.

“The amendment will not affect foreigners who work in the Czech Republic and abide by the law. It focuses primarily on cases of abuse of the system, illegal migration and individuals who do not comply with the current legislation of the Czech Republic,” said Interior Minister Lyubomir Metnar.

Among the new rules:

  • Ukrainians with temporary protection may lose it if they do not stay in the Schengen area for more than thirty days:
  • Temporary protection in the Czech Republic can also be lost if a serious crime is committed;
  • Recipients of humanitarian aid intended for refugees must be in the Czech Republic for at least 16 days in the month for which they are entitled to the aid;
  • Drivers of vehicles with Ukrainian license plates register their vehicles in the Czech vehicle register.

“According to data for March, there are 385,040 Ukrainian refugees in our country. Of this number, 90,000 are receiving assistance. Since the beginning of this year alone, we have identified several hundred cases of abuse, and since the beginning of the year, the police have initiated more than forty criminal prosecutions with damages exceeding 18 million crowns,” said Interior Minister Lyubomir Metnar.

Previously, Suspilne reported that the decision to extend the temporary protection mechanism for Ukrainian citizens in the European Union has not yet been made. Discussions in the EU are ongoing.
