The Ukrainian market for new-crop white cabbage has seen a noticeable drop in price. Producers attribute the price drop to a seasonal increase in supply and subdued demand from buyers.

Young cabbage is rapidly becoming cheaper

The Ukrainian market is experiencing a decline in prices for new-crop white cabbage. This is reported by analysts of the EastFruit project, who attribute the situation to seasonal factors and the active arrival of products on the market.

As of now, farmers are selling cabbage from the 2026 harvest for 34-40 hryvnias per kilogram. This is an average of 18% cheaper than at the end of the last working week.

This decline was a reaction of producers to the surplus of products and low activity of buyers. The market is gradually becoming saturated, and sellers are forced to adjust prices to speed up sales.

Mass gathering puts pressure on the market

One of the main reasons for the price drop was the active phase of harvesting early cabbage. Most Ukrainian farms have already started mass harvesting, which significantly increased the supply.

An additional factor was subdued demand. Wholesale buyers and retail chains are in no hurry to build up large stocks and mainly purchase vegetables in small batches.

Experts explain this behavior by the short shelf life of early cabbage. Because of this, traders and retailers try to avoid the risk of losses and work more carefully.

Last year's cabbage, on the contrary, is becoming more expensive.

While the new crop is getting cheaper, the 2025 harvest cabbage is showing the opposite trend. Farmers who have preserved quality stocks of last year's produce are revising prices upwards.

Currently, wholesale lots of last year's white cabbage are being sold for 10-17 hryvnias per kilogram, while a week earlier prices ranged from 8-15 hryvnias. The cost depends on the quality of the product and available volumes.

Market participants note that demand for last year's cabbage remains stable. At the same time, even after the latest price reduction, young cabbage in Ukraine costs an average of 14% more than in the same period last year. Experts attribute this to the cold and prolonged spring, which affected the pace of development of the new crop.

What are the prices for cabbage in stores now?

According to the Ministry of Finance, the following prices for young cabbage have currently been set in supermarkets of large Ukrainian chains:

  • Novus 59.99 hryvnias per kilogram;
  • Auchan 59.90 hryvnias per kilogram;
  • Metro 49 hryvnias per kilogram;
  • Megamarket 62.50 hryvnias per kilogram;
  • ATB 54.95 hryvnias per kilogram.

Onion prices have gone up again: what's happening on the market?

The situation with prices for last year's onions is similar to how last year's cabbage is becoming more expensive. The cost is rising due to limited supplies.

  • Onion prices in Ukraine have increased due to a reduction in vegetable stocks for the 2025 harvest and increased trade.

  • Despite the price increase, current prices remain approximately 68% lower than in mid-May 2025, and the quality of vegetables in storage is deteriorating.

An additional factor was the revival of trading activity. Buyers are more active in purchasing vegetables, which also supports the growth of product prices.
