US imposes sanctions against senior Cuban officials and agencies

The United States has imposed sanctions on eleven Cuban officials, including government officials and parliamentary leaders. Restrictions have also been imposed on Cuba's security forces.

This is stated in a statement by the US State Department.

Thus, the restrictions included Cuba's Minister of Communications Mayra Arevich Marin, the Speaker of the National Assembly Juan Esteban Laso Hernandez, and the Deputy Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, General Joaquín Quintas Sola, as well as a number of lower-level officials.

The sanctions list also includes Cuba's Directorate of Intelligence (DI), the Ministry of the Interior, and the National Revolutionary Police (PNR), the latter of which Washington accuses of using mobile prisons and suppressing protests.

“For more than 60 years, the Cuban regime has placed its communist ideology and self-enrichment above the well-being of its citizens, while allowing Cuba to be used for foreign intelligence, military, and terrorist operations,” the US State Department said.

They added that Washington “will continue to take measures to counter the Cuban regime.”

On May 1, US leader Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing sanctions against people responsible for repression in Cuba and creating threats to US national security and foreign policy.
