After a short period of stability, the Ukrainian onion market is once again showing price increases. Market participants attribute the price increase to a reduction in vegetable stocks for the 2025 harvest and increased trade.
Why did the price of onions start to rise in Ukraine?
Analysts from the EastFruit project report a new increase in onion prices in Ukraine. After a short period of stability, the market has again started to increase in price.
Market participants explain this situation by the reduction in stocks of 2025 harvest products on farms. Due to the decrease in the volume of vegetables in storage, the supply on the market is gradually falling.
An additional factor was the revival of trading activity. Buyers are more active in purchasing vegetables, which also supports the growth of product prices.

How much does an onion cost now?
As of now, Ukrainian farmers are selling onions for 5–10 hryvnia per kilogram. This is an average of 19% more expensive than at the end of the last working week.
However, producers note that the potential for further significant price increases remains limited. The main problem is the quality of vegetables that have been stored in storage for a long time.
Due to the deterioration in quality, buyers are increasingly expressing dissatisfaction with the products, which is deterring sellers from more drastic price revisions.
How do current prices differ from last year's?
Despite the recent price increase, onions in Ukraine are still significantly cheaper than last year. According to analysts, prices remain about 68% lower than in mid-May 2025.
It is currently not possible to significantly increase prices, as buyers are increasingly dissatisfied with the quality of the products offered,
– say the farmers.
They are also not sure that the market will continue to move upwards. Due to the rapid deterioration of the quality of vegetables in storage, some of the products may lose their marketable appearance in the near future.
What are the current prices for onions in supermarkets?
According to the Ministry of Finance, the following onion prices have currently been set in supermarkets of some large Ukrainian chains:
- Auchan 10.40 hryvnias per kilogram;
- Novus 9.49 hryvnias per kilogram;
- Megamarket 17.50 hryvnias per kilogram;
- ATB 9.89 hryvnia per kilogram;
- Silpo 14 hryvnias per kilogram.
Prices for last year's cabbage have skyrocketed in Ukrainian stores: what happened on the market?
In addition to onions, another vegetable that has seen its price rise quite actively over the past week is cabbage.
-
In Ukraine, prices for white cabbage of the 2025 harvest have increased significantly due to reduced stocks and high demand, reaching 8-15 hryvnias per kilogram.
-
In supermarkets, cabbage prices vary: Metro 19.90 UAH/kg, Megamarket 31 UAH/kg, Novus 14.89 UAH/kg, Auchan 22.90 UAH/kg, Silpo 23 UAH/kg, ATB 27.49 UAH/kg.
Despite the current price increase, white cabbage is still 77% cheaper on average than at the beginning of May last year. At the same time, sellers do not rule out that prices will continue to rise, as the volume of products on the market is rapidly decreasing.
