The early cherry season has started in Transcarpathia

The first cherries of the new harvest have begun to ripen in the Transcarpathian region, reports “Suspilne Uzhhorod”. Local residents are already picking the berries and selling them at the markets, although this year's season has been difficult due to weather conditions.

A resident of the village of Zavydovo, Mukachevo district, Elizaveta said that in good harvest years, one tree can yield quite a lot of berries.

Spring frosts hit the harvest

Local residents note that in recent years the trees have often suffered from sudden cold snaps in the spring. Due to the early warming, the cherries begin to bloom faster, but subsequent frosts can practically destroy the future harvest.

According to local resident Volodymyr, it only takes a few cold days with strong winds to lose a crop. That's why the trees are bearing less fruit than before.

Farmers note that weather risks remain one of the main challenges for growing early berries in the region.

How much do cherries cost in Ukrainian markets?

The market in Uzhhorod currently sells mostly imported cherries from Greece. Their cost reaches about 1,000 hryvnias per kilogram.

At the same time, the Ukrainian berry has already appeared at the Stolichny wholesale market in Kyiv. Transcarpathian cherries are sold there for approximately 180 hryvnias per kilogram.

Along with cherries, strawberries are actively traded in the markets. Depending on the variety, its price ranges from 180 to 270 hryvnias per kilogram.

As of mid-May 2026, cherry prices in Ukraine are quite high due to the early season and limited supply. In markets and stores, the price per kilogram ranges from 100-200 hryvnias (for local products), while premium or imported varieties can reach 400-850 hryvnias per kilogram and even more.

At the same time, domestic gardeners do not have it as easy on the pear market as they do with cherries, as there is strong pressure from imports.
