Washington is counting on the resumption of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia and has stated its readiness to continue acting as a mediator in this process. In particular, it has been emphasized that the United States is currently “the only country that can do this.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said this in an interview with Fox News.
“We're ready, the president is ready, his team is ready to facilitate a diplomatic end to the war. Unfortunately, we've lost some momentum over the last few months for a variety of reasons: the Ukrainians are feeling more confident about their position on the battlefield; they've come through the winter; the Russians are a little more optimistic because the price of oil has gone up. But hopefully, whether it's a statement from Vladimir Putin or something else, hopefully we'll get to a point soon where both sides will start a dialogue again. And we're ready to play a mediation role and see this through to completion,” Rubio said.
According to him, the United States is currently the only country in the world capable of ending Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine.
“I think we're the only country in the world that can do it. If anyone else wants to try, let them try, but both sides keep telling us that we're the only ones who can do it. Ultimately, the president (Donald Trump — ed.) wants the war to end. And if there's anything he can do, and anything we can do to help end it, we'll do it,” the US Secretary of State noted.
Rubio also noted that US President Donald Trump wants the war to end as soon as possible, calling it “insane.” According to the Secretary of State, Ukraine will need decades to rebuild, while the Russian economy is already suffering huge losses.
“There is no doubt that the necessity of waging this war has forced the Ukrainians to develop new tactics, new methods, new equipment, new technology, which creates a kind of hybrid asymmetric war. It is impressive, no doubt. You look at the Russians, who are losing five times more soldiers per month than the Ukrainians. Ukraine is a smaller country and a smaller army, although the Ukrainian Armed Forces are the strongest, most powerful Armed Forces in all of Europe,” Rubio said.
In addition, he added that the Russian Federation loses approximately 15 to 20 thousand soldiers killed every month.
As a reminder, on May 8, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that a visit by US representatives to Ukraine is expected “at the turn of spring and summer.”
On May 7, Umerov arrived in the United States, where he met in Miami with US President's special representative Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner. The main focus was on the humanitarian track: “the return of our prisoners held by Russia.” The NSDC Secretary added that the parties also “discussed the need to intensify the diplomatic process and coordinate further steps to achieve a decent peace.”
On April 25, Zelenskyy said that the Ukrainian side is ready to hold another round of talks in Azerbaijan to end the war in the Ukraine-US-RF format. Earlier, a source in the Ukrainian negotiating delegation reported that the next rounds of trilateral meetings between Ukraine, the Russian Federation and the US do not yet have exact dates and venues.
