Just hours before the official event The Android Show: I/O Edition, a massive leak of data about Google's new development shook the network. The spotlight was on Aluminum OS – the company's ambitious attempt to bring the Android experience to the big screen and create a full-fledged desktop environment.
What is Google's new desktop platform, Aluminum OS, hiding?
Social media is buzzing after the publication of extensive material from a well-known insider under the pseudonym Mystic Leaks. The author published not only a series of screenshots, but also a full-fledged 16-minute video, which demonstrates in detail the work of the new operating system Aluminum OS, writes AndroidAuthority.
This happened just before the start of a special edition of The Android Show | I/O Edition, at which Google planned to officially reveal its plans for the future of Android on personal computers.
Interestingly, a MacBook Pro was used to demonstrate the capabilities of the new system, running Aluminium OS via the UTM emulator. This allowed us to take a detailed look at the interface and functionality of the system, which many have already called “Android for desktops.”
According to Mystic Leaks, which he revealed on his Telegram channel, Google's development looks like an attempt to combine mobile flexibility with desktop performance.
The insider described the current state of the system in a rather restrained manner. He noted that Google's Aluminum OS is “essentially regular Android,” but with the addition of a few key features for desktop computers. Among the most notable innovations are:
- the ability to create folders directly on the desktop;
- support for virtual desktops for better window organization;
- optimized quick settings panel and notification center;
- updated Task Manager, adapted for large screens;
- deep ecosystem integration between laptop and mobile devices, including the “Link to iOS” feature for iPhone owners.
Despite these features, Mystic Leaks calls the current Aluminum OS experience more of an “enhanced version of Samsung DeX” than a fully standalone desktop operating system.
The main problem at this stage remains the lack of software specifically optimized for mouse and keyboard control. Even the proprietary Google applications shown in the video look like web versions wrapped in a windowed interface.
Right now, Aluminum OS feels more like a slightly improved version of Samsung DeX than a true desktop-level OS. Its main drawbacks are the complete lack of mouse and keyboard-optimized apps […], as well as the limited amount of hardware it will run on. Because, let’s be honest, Snapdragon X chips aren’t nearly as good as Apple’s M series,
– commented Mystic Leaks.
The initial setup process looks familiar to any Android user. The welcome screen allows you to configure the hardware for work or personal needs using Google's standard setup wizard.
After completing this stage, the user is taken to the main screen, where at the bottom there is an application dock with an application menu button, a traditional Google search bar, Play Store icons, and a folder with the company's standard services.

The controls have also undergone a transformation. The quick settings panel now slides out to the side in a compact form when you tap the battery indicator in the status bar. The Settings app itself largely follows the logic and design we're used to seeing on modern Android smartphones.
This leak was a serious blow to Google's intrigue before the presentation, as the community now has a clear idea of the direction the corporation is taking in terms of combining mobile and desktop platforms.

As the tech world prepares for official announcements at Google I/O 2026, some users of mobile apps on iOS and Android have already noticed new animations and references to an AI model that had not previously appeared in official releases.
Reddit user Zacatac_391 reported that after opening the Gemini app, he saw a pop-up window prompting him to “create with Gemini Omni.” The software solution is described as Google's “new video model.”
The first tests of the model demonstrated its ability to perform complex logical reasoning, which is often a weak point for modern neural networks, writes AndroidAuthority. The user tested the system using a complex text query: “A professor writes a mathematical proof of trigonometric identities on a traditional blackboard, explaining the step of the equation he is currently on.”
The result was impressive: Gemini Omni not only correctly reproduced the mathematical logic, but also generated a video that looks very realistic and accurate. However, a close look allows you to notice certain signs of artificial origin: sometimes the writing movements do not coincide with the appearance of the chalk on the board, and the chalk itself can suddenly disappear towards the end of the video.

The next test was designed to test the neural network's ability to work with dynamic scenes and object interactions. The query involved two men having dinner at a fancy restaurant by the sea and eating spaghetti. The query was highly detailed: the characters' clothing, their age, the round shape of the table with a white tablecloth and all the necessary cutlery were described.
However, the task turned out to be less successful. Viewers noticed classic AI errors: spaghetti appeared literally out of nowhere on empty plates, and the chewing process did not correspond to the amount of food the characters supposedly consumed.

For comparison, another Reddit user with the nickname janekm3 tried to recreate the same scenario using the Seedance 2 model from ByteDance. The competitor's result looked more stable, although it was accompanied by noticeable image shaking.

The technical side of the Gemini Omni also raises many questions. Max Weinbach, a well-known insider, found evidence in the metadata that the new model is an extension of an existing Google technology called Veo. This points to an evolutionary path for video generation in the Google ecosystem.
In addition, it became known that the process of creating such content is extremely resource-intensive. Even within the paid Google AI Pro plan, strict limits are set: after generating just two videos, user Zacatac_391 exhausted 86 percent of his daily limit.
What is known about the presentation itself: when will The Android Show I/O Edition start, how to watch, what will be shown
Today, May 12, 2026, technology giant Google is holding its annual event, The Android Show I/O Edition. This event has become the central platform for presenting the company's software achievements, writes The Verge.
Previously, Google traditionally made key announcements about its operating system during its general I/O developer conference. However, last year the strategy was revised, and Android now has its own separate event, emphasizing the importance of this ecosystem to the company's strategy, notes 24 Kanal .
This year's show will be held in a streaming format, so there will be no in-person audience. You can watch the live broadcast on the official YouTube channel dedicated to the Android operating system.
The start is scheduled for 10:00 AM Pacific Time, which corresponds to 8:00 PM Kyiv Time. For those who are afraid to miss the start, the video player has a “Notify Me” function that will send a notification before the broadcast starts.

What will they show us?
One of the most anticipated topics of the evening will be Android 17. With the beta testing program for this operating system already in full swing, journalists and users are expecting to hear more technical details and descriptions of new features.
It's important to note that last week, Google officially denied rumors that it might be adopting an Apple-like Liquid Glass design, a news that was welcomed by the community that prefers the original look of Android's interface.
A significant part of the presentation will be dedicated to mobile artificial intelligence, in particular the new capabilities of Gemini. Experts expect the announcement of the Proactive Assistance function, the existence of which was previously reported by insiders.
Additionally, Google may reveal details about its Aluminum OS desktop platform and Android XR augmented reality initiatives, signaling the company's intent to create a unified technology space where mobile devices, computers, and augmented reality headsets work closely together.
Is it worth waiting for the Pixel 11?
As for hardware, the Pixel 11 series is unlikely to be announced today. Historically, Google's flagship devices have debuted in August, so they're still a few months away from release.
However, Android Authority reminds us that Google has a history of giving short teasers of upcoming devices. For example, the Pixel 7 smartphones were first shown at the May I/O conference, six months before they actually went on sale.
