- Underground schools provide full-time education for 40% of schoolchildren in conditions of constant Russian shelling.

In Kharkiv, 21 underground locations have already been opened, which are safe spaces for children to study. They appeared at metro stations and are designed for several classes.
This was reported by Channel 24 correspondent Anna Chernenko from Kharkiv, noting that it will be able to accommodate several hundred students. Such institutions allow children to study without fear of constant attacks from the Russians.
Underground schools have become the need of the hour
Studying in underground schools gives children the opportunity to communicate with their peers and teachers. According to the city's education department, thanks to such underground spaces, it was possible to provide face-to-face education for 40% of schoolchildren. Despite the fact that the study takes place in shifts, it is still a good solution in wartime conditions.
Today, 19,800 children in Kharkiv have the opportunity to sit at desks. In general, this is about 40% of all children studying in the city. Another number are schoolchildren who left, but continue their studies in Kharkiv schools remotely.
There are 8 underground schools in our city. These are powerful centers, where from 1000 to 1700 children study. We also open such small centers. For example, 350 students study in these 4 classrooms, there are still a few free places, but I think the number of children will increase soon,
– said Olga Demenko, director of the Education Department of the Kharkiv City Council.
It is worth noting that shortly before the opening of the underground location in the metro, another, much larger underground space was opened where children will study. The city council announces the launch of two more such schools in the first half of 2026.
There is also talk of starting the construction of an underground kindergarten. It has different educational requirements, so the design and budgeting took quite a long time. There is a great need for underground schools and kindergartens, because there are still a lot of children in Kharkiv. The presence of such institutions is a requirement of the time in which we live.
