Promised to help travel to Hungary for €16,000: Kyiv suspect held in custody

The Holosiivskyi District Prosecutor's Office of Kyiv has reported a 42-year-old local resident to the police for suspicion. He is accused of helping to smuggle conscripts across the state border of Ukraine.

The investigation established that during a personal meeting, the suspect offered the man assistance in illegally leaving for Hungary. He asked for 16,000 euros for his services.

“According to the plan, a car is to pick up the conscript from Kyiv, then he waits for several hours at a hotel in Transcarpathia, after which he is picked up again by a car and taken to the border with Hungary. There he is to cross the border outside the checkpoint. The suspect was detained immediately after transferring 16 thousand euros,” the report says.

The actions of the detainee were classified under Part 3 of Article 332 Assistance in the illegal smuggling of persons across the state border of Ukraine by advice, instructions, committed for selfish motives. The maximum sanction of the article provides for up to nine years of imprisonment with deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for a term of up to three years with confiscation of property. The suspect was chosen as a preventive measure – detention with the right to post bail.

It was previously reported that a scheme for issuing fictitious documents was uncovered in Kyiv. The scheme involved caring for relatives, which allowed them to get a deferment from mobilization and travel abroad. A couple of lawyers and an employee of the district state administration are suspected.

A man suspected of organizing illegal travel abroad to avoid mobilization was also detained in the capital. According to the case materials, the suspect promised a man of draft age unhindered border crossing as a clergyman for $10,000.

Kyiv law enforcement officers also charged a 26-year-old man with organizing the departure of men liable for military service to Moldova. According to investigators, the suspect offered to leave Ukraine in two ways: as part of a football team or to cross the border on foot.
