Europe invested more in supporting Ukraine than the US — Blinken

Former US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that allegations that allies were “using” the United States to support Ukraine were not true. According to him, for every dollar the US invested in Ukraine, European and other partners invested $1.50.

He said this during a speech at an event at the Economic Club of New York.

“For every dollar we invested in Ukraine, the Europeans and others invested a dollar and a half. So the claim that they took advantage of the situation in Ukraine is simply false,” Blinken said.

He added that a significant portion of American aid to Ukraine actually remained in the US economy — for the purchase of weapons systems for Kyiv or to replenish the Pentagon's own reserves, from which the equipment was transferred.

Separately, Blinken assessed the development of the Ukrainian defense sector. According to him, Ukraine has seized the initiative in the field of military technology and is shaping trends even for NATO partners — primarily in the development of drones and new solutions on the battlefield. He called Russia's war against Ukraine a catalyst for changes in Western armies, which are now forced to quickly adapt defense approaches to the realities of modern warfare.

Anthony Blinken served as U.S. Secretary of State in the administration of President Joe Biden from January 2021 to January 2025. During his tenure, the United States coordinated international support for Ukraine after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion.
