Former Ukrainian number one Kalinina advances to the main draw of the WTA 1000 in Rome

Former Ukrainian number one Angelina Kalinina reached the main draw of the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome. In the qualifying final, the Ukrainian tennis player defeated American Katie Volynets.

Kalinina reached the main draw of the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome for the fourth time in her career. In the qualifying final, the Ukrainian defeated the 104th-ranked Katie Volynets from the United States in straight sets.

How was the match?

  • The first set was in favor of the Ukrainian tennis player. Kalinina realized three break points and led 5:1. Kalinina failed to complete the match with a victory in the seventh game, but on the very next serve the Ukrainian player outplayed her opponent and won with a score of 6:2.
  • Kalinina made a run of four consecutive games in the second set. Despite Volynets' attempt to seize the initiative, the Ukrainian was still able to finish the match with a victory and advance to the main draw of the tournament.

Kalinina will become the fifth Ukrainian in the main draw of the WTA 1000 tournament in Rome. In addition to her, Elina Svitolina, Yulia Starodubtseva, Oleksandra Oliynykova and Dayana Yastremska also participate in the competition.

This is Kalinina's fourth appearance in the main draw of the Rome tournament. Her best result is the 2023 final, where she lost to Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina.

Marta Kostyuk was also scheduled to play in Rome, but the second-ranked Ukrainian withdrew from the tournament due to a right hip injury. Meanwhile, Daria Snigur, who also participated in the qualifiers, failed to advance to the main draw of the tournament, losing in the final.
