Greenhouse cucumber prices continue to fall in Ukraine – prices have been falling for the third week in a row. The reason was a sharp increase in supply and weak demand.
Supply is growing faster than demand
The greenhouse cucumber market in Ukraine continues to show a downward trend in prices. According to EastFruit analysts, the key reasons are the seasonal increase in supply and slow sales.
As of now, producers are offering cucumbers at a price of 40-70 hryvnias per kilogram. This is about 22 percent cheaper than at the end of last week.
Wholesale companies and retail chains purchase products in small batches, mainly for quick sale. Such caution is due to the short shelf life of cucumbers.
Warm weather accelerated the fall in prices
Market participants note that the establishment of warm weather has significantly accelerated the ripening of products in greenhouses. This has led to an even greater increase in volumes on the market.
Additional pressure is created by the arrival of cucumbers from film greenhouses, which expands supply and intensifies competition between producers.
As a result, farmers are forced to lower prices to avoid hoarding. If demand does not increase, the trend towards lower prices may continue.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the following prices for cucumbers have now been set in Ukrainian supermarkets:
- Auchan 69.90 hryvnias per kilogram;
- Metro 71.76 hryvnias per kilogram;
- Megamarket 82.50 hryvnias per kilogram;
- Silpo 110 hryvnias per kilogram;
- ATB 94.95 hryvnias per kilogram.

Greenhouse tomato prices in Ukraine are declining due to increasing supply and weak demand, with greenhouse plants selling tomatoes for 130-160 hryvnia per kilogram.
-
Despite the price decline, current tomato prices remain 73% higher than the same period last year.
If sales rates do not increase, the market may continue to adjust downward, especially against the backdrop of increasing domestic supply and stable imports.
