In Ukraine, onion prices have started to rise for the first time in several months. The rise in prices is attributed to a reduction in stocks and increased demand.
Onion prices have risen after a long lull
For the first time since the beginning of February, Ukrainian producers were able to increase selling prices for onions, EastFruit reports. As analysts note, this significant increase in the market has not been observed since mid-May 2025.
As of now, farmers are ready to sell their products at a price of 4-9 hryvnias per kilogram, which is approximately 40 percent more expensive than at the end of last week.
The key factors behind the price increase were seasonal depletion of farm stocks and increased purchases by wholesale companies. Against the backdrop of reduced supply, especially of quality products, prices began to react quickly.
Demand is high, but prices are even lower than last year
Despite the rising cost, demand for onions remains consistently high. Most producers have already sold their stocks, and those who still have quality products are counting on further price increases.
At the same time, the current price level is still significantly lower than last year. On average, onions cost 68 percent less than during the same period last year.
Market participants predict that the positive dynamics will continue until the new harvest of onions from Ukrainian farms begins to arrive on the market in large quantities. That is when prices may stabilize again or change the trend.
According to the Ministry of Finance, the following onion prices have now been set in supermarkets:
- Auchan 8.50 hryvnias per kilogram;
- Novus 8.49 hryvnias per kilogram;
- Megamarket 14.50 hryvnias per kilogram;
- ATB 8.45 hryvnia per kilogram;
- Silpo 14 hryvnias per kilogram.
Potato prices have more than halved: when can we expect a price increase?
-
Potato prices in Ukraine have more than halved due to high yields and small product sizes.
-
Stocks of old potatoes are dwindling, which could lead to shortages and higher prices in the coming weeks.
Experts predict that the reduction in supply will be the key driver of price growth . If cheap stocks run out, the market can quickly enter a new stage of price increases.
