The Ventura County District Attorney's Office reported that Britney Spears has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, but it did not specify what drug the singer was using.
The New York Times writes about this.
A preliminary hearing in Britney Spears' case is scheduled for Monday in Ventura County Superior Court. Officials said in a press release that the pop star is not required to attend because she is only charged with a misdemeanor.
Recall that the Grammy Award winner was arrested on the evening of March 4 on suspicion of driving under the influence after police officers noticed that she was speeding.
In a statement to E! News, Spears' rep said it was “an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable.” He added that the singer “will take the right steps and comply with the law in the future.”
In a press release, prosecutors said the pop star will have the opportunity to enter into a plea agreement that would allow her to avoid prison. The agreement includes probation, drunk driving prevention courses, and a fine.
About a month after the arrest, Britney's representative said that she had voluntarily checked into a rehabilitation center.
What is known about Britney Spears?
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Britney Spears became one of the most popular pop stars thanks to chart-topping hits such as Baby One More Time, and was also the focus of tabloid attention.
For almost 13 years, until 2021, the singer was under the care of her father. He controlled his daughter's finances and personal life, but at the same time she continued to make music and tour.
Spears protested the custody in an emotional speech before a judge. The artist said she was drugged, forced to work against her will, and forced to undergo medical examinations and rehabilitation.
In her 2023 memoir, “The Woman in Me,” Britney denied reports that she had an ongoing substance abuse problem.
