Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis said he plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the European Political Community summit, which will be held on May 4 in the Armenian capital, Yerevan.
The statement of the head of the Czech government is cited by iDNES.
Yes, this meeting with the Ukrainian leader will be Babis' first since taking office as Czech Prime Minister. He did not provide specific details of the upcoming conversation with Zelensky, but emphasized its importance.
“There I will also hold short bilateral meetings with the Prime Minister of Great Britain, the Prime Minister of Serbia and the President of Moldova. For the first time, I will also hold talks with the President of Ukraine Zelensky,” Babis said, outlining his working schedule for the summit after visits to Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
At the same time, despite the planned meeting, the politician said that he does not intend to visit Kyiv on an official visit. However, he noted that another opportunity to meet with Zelensky may arise in the future at a conference in Poland dedicated to the reconstruction of Ukraine.
On April 30, EDnews, citing a statement by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, reported that Zelensky would arrive in Yerevan on May 4. The Office of the President of Ukraine has not yet announced his visit to the Armenian capital.
The 8th summit of the European Political Community will be held in Yerevan on May 4, bringing together leaders of European countries and heads of international organizations. Participants are expected to discuss energy and economic security, the current geopolitical situation, and efforts to strengthen stability across Europe.
Andrej Babis' government and its attitude towards Ukraine
On October 4, 2025, parliamentary elections were held in the Czech Republic. Czechs elected 200 deputies to the lower house of parliament under a proportional electoral system for a four-year term. The ANO party, led by Andrej Babis, won the election with 34.5%. On December 9, Czech President Petr Pavel appointed Babis as the country's prime minister.
The 71-year-old politician is the seventh richest person in the Czech Republic. His net worth, according to Forbes, is $3.9 billion. In the context of his business-like approach to government, he calls himself a “Trumpist,” and the media, given his populist slogans, compares him to former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi or current Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
This spring, Babis said he saw the true end to the war in Ukraine not in providing more weapons to Ukraine, but in diplomacy. At the same time, he called Russia “the aggressor who unleashed the conflict.”
