The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant continues to record a number of technical and safety problems related to ensuring the stable operation of critical infrastructure.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said this at a press conference, a correspondent for Suspilny reports.
According to him, the agency continues to verify the presence of nuclear materials at the station, as well as monitor the integrity of spent and fresh fuel and reactor cores. Inspections at the facility continue as normal.
Grossi noted that all power units of the ZNPP are currently in a cold shutdown state, with no active electricity generation. At the same time, he stressed that the situation remains tense due to external factors.
One of the key problems is the unstable power supply. According to the head of the IAEA, one of the two power lines is currently not functioning, which creates additional risks for the facility. Negotiations are underway to ensure safe conditions for repair teams to restore the damaged infrastructure.
The second critical problem remains water supply for cooling systems. After the Kakhovka Dam was blown up in 2023, the water level in the reservoir dropped significantly, forcing the use of alternative sources. Currently, 11 wells are used to cool the reactors, and an auxiliary dam has also been built to preserve water supplies.
Grossi stressed that while there is currently no direct threat of an emergency due to the cold shutdown of the reactors, the plant requires constant technical monitoring and stable operating conditions for the infrastructure. The situation, he said, remains unstable and requires a long-term solution.
