“A great honor.” Romania's national football team announces new coach after Mircea Lucescu's death

The Romanian national football team has officially announced the appointment of Gheorghe Haxhi as the team's head coach. This was reported on the official website of the Romanian Football Federation.

The 61-year-old has signed a four-year deal, with the team under Haji set to play in the next two qualifying campaigns (for the European and World Championships).

The Romanian national team failed to reach the finals of this year's World Cup. They were defeated by Turkey in the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff. After the team's failure to qualify for the World Cup, former coach Mircea Lucescu was fired as head coach.

Three days after the match, the coach was urgently hospitalized during a technical meeting at the Mogosoaia training base. Subsequently, the coach was put into an artificial coma, from which the 80-year-old Lucescu could not emerge and his heart stopped on April 7.
