Diplomats do not expect unblocking of “Ukrainian” issues at EU ministerial meeting on April 21

EU foreign ministers will gather for a regular meeting in Luxembourg on April 21. As previously reported by the EU's chief diplomat Kaia Kallas, the agenda will include issues related to the 90 billion loan for Ukraine and the 20th package of sanctions against Russia, which, according to her, are “long overdue for unblocking.” At the same time, diplomats believe that these matters should be discussed when the new government fully comes to power.

EU diplomats informed the Public about this.

“This is still the current government, so I don't expect any significant changes to be announced, but we are hopeful. We need to unblock a few issues regarding our support for Ukraine. And the most important one right now is the 90 billion,” the diplomats note.

According to them, a European Commission team is currently in Budapest, which is an unprecedented step. According to Suspilny, it includes the head of the Office of the President of the European Commission and several directors general. They plan to discuss these issues with representatives of the future Hungarian government.

Two diplomats suggested that the current Hungarian Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, would not attend the EU ministers' meeting, one of whom added: “I would be very surprised if he showed up.” At the same time, according to officials, during the meeting, Kallas will recall recent scandals related to the leak of information from Budapest to Moscow.

“I expect that she will reaffirm at this ministerial level the importance of confidentiality and what we call the principle of sincere cooperation as the foundation of how we do business in the EU and work as a community,” the European diplomats added.

As a reminder, on April 16, against the backdrop of another massive Russian attack on Ukraine, the head of European diplomacy, Kaia Kallas, stated that next week the EU Foreign Affairs Council would consider unblocking a loan of 90 billion euros and the 20th package of anti-Russian sanctions.
