Mark Mobius has died: what is known about him?

It is known that Mark Mobius died on April 15, writes FT.

He closely linked his career with Franklin Templeton, which he joined in 1987. Over more than 30 years of work, he not only made a name for himself, but also launched one of the first funds focused on emerging markets.

Mobius headed Templeton Emerging Markets Investment Trust until 2015, during which time he transformed it from a relatively small fund into a giant: assets under management grew from $100 million to $40 billion. He finally left Franklin Templeton in 2018:

  • The investor was well known not only for his professional achievements, but also for his character.
  • He was straightforward and not afraid of harsh words.
  • For example, in a 2018 interview, he called Donald Trump “as stupid as a fox.”

His approach to work was as “field-based” as possible. In his biography, Mobius recalled traveling to dozens of countries in search of undervalued companies : visiting rubber plantations in Thailand, testing bicycles in rural China, and even tasting exotic foods – from camel meat to fried scorpions.

After leaving Franklin Templeton, he did not stop. Together with colleagues, he founded his own company, Mobius Capital Partners, and openly stated that he was not going to retire. He maintained an active role in the business until his last years and left his leadership position only in 2023.
