The EU does not expect the Peace Fund to be unblocked soon, despite the change of government in Hungary

The European Union does not believe that the new Hungarian government will quickly unblock the European Peace Fund, which is used to reimburse EU member states for military assistance to Ukraine.

An EU official informed the Public about this.

European Union High Representative Kaia Kallas has been calling on Hungary to unblock the fund for several years.

“I expect there will be a lot of interest in moving forward in one way or another, but I don't expect it to happen quickly. These things take time. If there is a new opportunity to move forward on the issue of ambitious support for Ukraine, I think many ministers will be very interested in this,” our interlocutor said.

Hungary blocked the European Peace Fund in 2024. About 6 billion euros had accumulated there.

Earlier, the leader of the Tisza party, which won the elections in Hungary on April 12, Peter Magyar, said that his government may lift its veto on a European Union loan for Ukraine in the amount of 90 billion euros after the resumption of oil supplies through the Druzhba oil pipeline.

Parliamentary elections in Hungary

Parliamentary elections were held in Hungary on April 12. The turnout was record-breaking — 79.5% of voters.

The current Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, who leads the Fidesz party, admitted his defeat and congratulated Peter Magyar on his victory.

In his victory speech, the leader of “Tysy” announced a course to restore cooperation with NATO and the EU, in particular with the Visegrad Four countries, and announced that he would make his first official visit to Poland.

With 99% of votes counted, the Tisza party led by Peter Magyar is winning the elections in Hungary and will have enough seats to form a constitutional majority in parliament.
