Alcaraz missed the opportunity to regain the world ranking leadership after the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona

Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona due to a wrist injury, tournament organizers announced.

The ATP ranking leader changed last week, with Italian Yannick Sinner overtaking Alcaraz after defeating him in the final of the Monte Carlo tournament. The Spaniard's next tournament was the ATP in Barcelona.

In Barcelona, Alcaraz started the first round against Otto Virtanen, defeating him in three sets. The Spaniard was then scheduled to play a second round match against Czech Tomas Machac, but withdrew from the tournament due to a wrist injury.

As a result of the withdrawal from the tournament in Barcelona, Alcaraz lost the opportunity to regain the leadership of the ATP world ranking. Currently, Alcaraz's gap to Sinner in the ATP world ranking is 110 points. Since the current world leader is not competing in Barcelona, Carlos had a chance to overtake the Italian in the standings if he won the title at the ATP 500 tournament. However, now Sinner will retain his status as the world's first racket thanks to his advantage over the Spaniard.

How is Carlos Alcaraz performing in the 2026 season?

  • Alcaraz has been at the top of the ATP rankings since early November 2025, when he won matches at the Final Tournament in Turin.
  • Throughout the 2026 season, the Spaniard maintained his lead and won his first Australian Open title.
