A businessman suspected of organizing a grain procurement scheme that caused millions in losses to the state has been extradited to Ukraine. The deal resulted in the state-owned enterprise losing over 13.4 million hryvnias.
How did the grain procurement scheme work?
According to the investigation, in early 2020, officials of the Poltava branch of the state-owned enterprise concluded contracts for the supply of grain for the upcoming harvest, the SAPO reports. The issue was the sale of agricultural products of their own production.
These agreements were later amended to effectively remove the requirement to take market prices into account when making deliveries, allowing grain to be sold at significantly lower prices.
As a result, the products were sold at almost half the market price, which, according to NABU, caused losses to the state-owned enterprise in the amount of 13.4 million hryvnias.
Extradition and court verdict
The person involved in the case, who was abroad, was extradited from Germany. The transfer took place at the Krakivets-Korchova checkpoint in the Lviv region.
Previously, the Supreme Anti-Corruption Court found him guilty and sentenced him to 3 years and 10 months in prison.
The case is currently one of the examples of investigations into abuses in the field of agricultural procurement. At the same time, according to the law, any person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a final court verdict.
