In Ukraine, greenhouse tomatoes continue to rise in price due to limited supply and active demand. Additional pressure on prices is created by the rise in the price of imported products.

Shortages and imports push prices up

According to EastFruit analysts, greenhouse tomato prices in Ukraine continued to rise this week. The main reason was the reduction in supply on the domestic market.

The situation is complicated by the rise in the price of tomatoes in Turkey, a key exporter of this product to Ukraine. This is due to the fact that Turkish producers are more actively reorienting supplies to the European Union markets, where demand is also high.

As a result, over the past seven days, prices for greenhouse tomatoes have increased by an average of 10%. The product is currently being sold for 160-180 hryvnias per kilogram.

Demand is high, but the situation may change

Market participants note that demand for tomatoes remains consistently high, while supply is limited. This is due to the fact that the market is still dominated by imported products.

At the same time, Ukrainian greenhouse plants are only just beginning to harvest, and the volumes are still small. That is why the domestic market cannot yet fully meet consumer needs.

Compared to last year, prices for greenhouse tomatoes are already 77% higher on average. However, sellers do not rule out that growth may slow down or stop in the second half of the month – after new products from Ukrainian producers enter the market en masse.

According to the Ministry of Finance, currently, tomato prices in popular Ukrainian supermarket chains have settled at the following level:

  • Auchan 302.60 hryvnias per kilogram;
  • Metro 238.16 hryvnias per kilogram;
  • Novus 219 hryvnias per kilogram;
  • Megamarket 280 hryvnias per kilogram;
  • ATB 227.89 hryvnia per kilogram;
  • Silpo 279.40 hryvnias per kilogram.

Carrot prices are rising sharply: what is happening to prices in Ukraine?

  • Carrot prices in Ukraine have increased due to high demand and seasonal shortages in storage, and are now 20% higher than last week.

  • Prices in supermarkets range from 8.80 to 19 hryvnias per kilogram, but in annual terms, carrots are still 69% cheaper than last year.
