Trump calls on Iran not to charge tankers for passage through the Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump has called on Iran to stop charging tankers for passage through the Strait of Hormuz and stressed that Tehran is “disgracefully” managing to ensure the free transportation of oil through this waterway.

He wrote about this on his social network Truth Social.

“Reports are emerging that Iran is charging tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz. It would be better if it didn't happen, and if it does, they better stop doing it immediately!” Trump wrote.

As a reminder, on April 8, Iran announced that it would require shipping companies to pay tolls in bitcoin for the passage of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz during a two-week truce.

According to Hamid Hossein, a representative of the Iranian Oil Exporters Union, the tariff will be $1 per barrel of oil, with empty tankers passing free of charge. Vessels must send an email with information about the cargo, after which Iran will provide a duty calculation and a few seconds to pay in bitcoin, which makes it impossible to track the payment due to sanctions.

In addition, Trump noted that Iran is “doing a disgraceful job” of ensuring the free passage of oil through the Strait of Hormuz.

“Iran is doing a terrible job, and some would say disgraceful, of ensuring the unimpeded passage of oil through the Strait of Hormuz. This is not the deal we have,” the American leader wrote.
