Ukraine Counts on Japan’s Leading Role in Post-War Reconstruction – Sybiha at EXPO-2025

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybikha attended the opening ceremony of the National Day of Ukraine at EXPO 2025 in Japan and emphasized the deep historical connection between the Ukrainian and Japanese peoples.

As the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported, citing Sibikha’s words, Ukraine hopes for Japan’s active participation in the restoration and reconstruction after the war. He noted that the Ukrainian government highly appreciates Japan’s support in demining territories and holding a conference on mine action in Tokyo in October this year.

“We expect Japan to play a key role in the restoration of Ukraine. Japanese technologies are already helping to restore life in places where Russia has brought destruction. Ukraine is a country of opportunity and a future member of the EU,” the minister noted.

Sibikha expressed his sincere gratitude to the Japanese government for its assistance in the amount of 15 billion US dollars and for the introduction of 27 packages of sanctions, as well as to the International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the NEXI agency and the JETRO organization.

Sibikha emphasized that forcing Russia to peace is only possible through force, and in this context, Ukraine is capable of defending the world from Russian aggression, provided that military parity with Russia is achieved.

“Ukraine is determined to achieve a just and sustainable peace this year,” the minister added.

According to the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan is one of three countries with which a strategic partnership was established during the conflict. The basis of bilateral relations is respect for the norms of international law, in particular, for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both countries. The Minister recalled that in October 2022, the President of Ukraine signed a Decree confirming commitment to the sovereignty of Japan, including its northern territories occupied by Russia.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs noted that the security of Ukraine and the Asia-Pacific region is a single whole.

The main theme of the EXPO 2025 exhibition in Japan is “Designing the Future Society for Our Lives”. More than 160 countries are participating in the exhibition, demonstrating their own innovative achievements, as well as seven international organizations. The concept of Ukraine’s exposition at the exhibition is focused on the theme “Values of the Future: Actions, Not Declarations” and is designed to demonstrate to the world the values that Ukraine professes, first of all: sustainable development, humanism, freedom of choice, respect for the rights and freedoms of citizens, innovation and involvement.

The national section of Ukraine is called “Not for Sale” and is presented in the format of a store, where 18 goods not intended for sale are displayed. Each “good” on the shelves “tells” its own story about values that cannot be assessed in money.
