The first batches of locally produced greenhouse tomatoes have arrived on the Ukrainian market. However, this has not stopped the rise in prices, which are already significantly higher than last year's figures.
Why are Ukrainian greenhouse tomatoes becoming more expensive?
Last week, Ukrainian greenhouse plants began supplying the first batches of new season tomatoes to the market, EastFruit reports. However, production volumes remain limited due to adverse weather conditions.
Despite the earlier start of the season compared to last year, supply has not yet met demand. This is what supports the upward price trend in the segment.
Currently, greenhouse farms sell tomatoes at a price of 150–170 hryvnias per kilogram. This is an average of 66% more expensive than at the beginning of the 2025 season.
Imports hold the market, but they don't get cheaper
The main share of the market supply is still made up of imported tomatoes, in particular from Turkey. They are sold somewhat cheaper than Ukrainian products, but also remain at a high level.
Prices for imported tomatoes range from 130–150 hryvnias per kilogram, depending on the quality and volume of batches.
Market participants expect a significant increase in the supply of local tomatoes to occur no earlier than in two weeks. That is when prices may begin to gradually stabilize.
Currently, according to the Ministry of Finance, the following prices for tomatoes have been set in popular Ukrainian supermarket chains:
- Auchan 302.60 hryvnias per kilogram;
- Metro 217.36 hryvnias per kilogram;
- Novus 194 hryvnias per kilogram.
