US fighter jet shot down over Iran, pilots sought

An American fighter jet was shot down over Iran on April 2. The search and rescue operation is ongoing, but the pilots may be in Iran.

This was reported by Reuters, citing its own source in the US government.

Authorities in the Iranian provinces of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad said that whoever captured or killed the crew “will be especially praised,” according to the Iranian state news agency ISNA.

The US government believes that American pilots are still alive and on the run in Iran. If the pilots survive, it could “significantly raise the stakes” for the United States in a war against Iran, sources told Reuters.

White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said Trump had been briefed but did not confirm any details of the incident.

One of the two pilots was found and survived. The pilot ejected during the plane crash.
