The Polish government has decided to extend temporary border controls on the borders with Germany and Lithuania until October 1, 2026, explaining the decision by “a serious threat of illegal migration on both sections of the border.”
This is reported by Polish Radio, citing an order from the Polish Minister of the Interior and Administration.
It is noted that relevant checks will be carried out by border guards together with the police and military personnel of the Polish Territorial Defense Forces at at least 63 points: approximately 50 places on the border with Germany and 13 with Lithuania.
In particular, inspections will return to the Muzhakov crossing, which “is important for tourist, pedestrian and bicycle traffic, as well as for cross-border activities in the park.”
Border controls in Poland were introduced on 7 July 2025 and have been extended several times since then. According to the Schengen Borders Code, EU member states have the right to reintroduce internal border controls for up to six months “in the event of a presumed serious threat to public order or internal security”.
“If such a threat persists for more than six months, the country may extend the control for subsequent periods of no more than six months, but not more than two years in total. In such a case, it is necessary to notify other Member States, the European Parliament, the Council and the European Commission in advance,” the message says.
The document will enter into force on April 5, 2026.
